Funeral services for Torkel A. Groth, 79, who died here Monday, July 21, 1952, will be held Thursday, July 24, 1952 at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. O.A. Langehough in charge of the services.
Torkel A. Groth, better known to his many friends as Tom Groth, was born December 7, 1873, the son of Assor and Kjirsti Groth at the old Groth homestead north of St. Ansgar. He was baptized January 1, 1874 by Pastor Johan Olsen and was also confirmed by him September 30, 1888.
Mr. Groth received his early schooling at the Clyde school and later attended the St. Ansgar Seminary. Here he met Emma Wrolstad of Kenyon, Minnesota, whom he married May 22, 1902. They had two children, a daughter, Alice and a son, Ennert.
In the 1890's Mr. Groth worked in meat markets in St. Ansgar, first for Tuck West and later for Amos Golberg. At about the turn of the century he and his brother, Andrew, formed the firm of Groth Bros. and bought Mr. Golberg's meat market. Later they went into the grocery business, buying out the Peter Larson store.
The late Mr. Groth continued in the firm of Groth Bros, for over 20 years, during which time he was also active in civic affairs. He was mayor of St. Ansgar for several years.
Mr. Groth was well known and well liked by the many who came to know him as a result of his many years activity in St. Ansgar and as a member of the First Lutheran congregation. Many visited him during the past 27 months when he was an invalid and he especially enjoyed and appreciated the visits of so many relatives and friends who honored him and his wife on their golden wedding anniversary only two months ago.
After a long illness, Mr. Groth died Monday morning, July 21, 1952 at the age of 78 years, seven months and 14 days. He is survived by his wife, Emma, a daughter, Alice (Mrs. P.E. Highum), a son, Ennert, three grandsons, Thomas and Charles Groth and Edward Highum; also a sister, Mrs. Nellie Tollefson and one brother, Anton and a host of other relatives and friends.
Burial will be in the First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. O.A. Langehough in charge of committal services.
