Lawrence W. Matthews Funeral Held Saturday, March 7

Funeral Services for Lawrence W. Matthews Sr., 90, who died at Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines March 4, were held March 7 at the Grace Congregational United Church of Christ in Rutland, Vt. with the Rev. David Dean officiating.

Mr. Matthews was born on a farm in Middletown Springs, Vt. April 15, 1890, one of eight children of James and Janette (Cairns) Matthews.

He had made his home at Wesley Acres Retirement Home in Des Moines the past three years, but prior to that had maintained his own home in Rutland for more than 58 years. He had been a life insurance agent in the Rutland area most of his life. He was a member and deacon of Grace Congregational United Church of Christ.

Mr. Matthews is survived by four children: Norman of West Hebron, N.Y.; Mrs. Ralph (Bonita) Bryant of Framingham, Mass.; William of St. Ansgar; and Lawrence Jr. of Des Moines; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, Andrew of Rutland, Vt. and James of Middletown Springs, Vt.; several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven, Vermont, with Rev. Dean in charge of the committal services.
