Elmer Tingelstad, 90, of Pelican Rapids, MN died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
Elmer Johnny Tingelstad was born May 5, 1918 in Osage, Iowa, the son of Martin and Pauline (Stokk) Tingelstad. In 1921, Elmer's family moved to Pelican Rapids where he attended elementary school and graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1937.
Before entering the military, Elmer farmed with his family. From 1941 to 1945, Elmer served as a corporal in the United States Army. He was a gunner in the Battery B, 125th Artillery, 34th Division during World War II, serving in Italy and Africa and receiving three battle stars. Returning home from the military, Elmer farmed with his father until 1973.
On June 21, 1957, Elmer married Rose Washenberger at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids. He farmed many years on the home farm, and also worked at West Central Turkeys, Inc. for 15 years until his retirement.
Elmer entered the Good Samaritan Center in June of 2003.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and VFW Post 5252. He enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching football and baseball. He especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Elmer loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Rose of Pelican Rapids; two daughters, Jim (Tim) Hanson of Pelican Rapids and Kitty (Mike) Berg of Barnesville; five grandchildren, Christina (Jason) Meyer, Heather (Joe) Langston, Derek Haugrud, Jordan Berg and Cameron Berg; and three step-grandchildren, Sarah (Luke) Mertz, Anna Hanson, and Luke Hanson; two sisters-in-law, Ann Tingelstad and Rosemary Tingelstad, both of Seattle, Wash.; five nieces; and eight nephews.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Cora Johnson; and two brothers, Lloyd and Arnold Tingelstad.
Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Pelican Rapids.
Clergy: Rev. Laurie Skow-Anderson and Lay Pastor Al Grothe.
Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Pelican Rapids, with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 5252 and American Legion Post 17.
Funeral Home: Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids.
