Knut Andersen Lundene, 1844-1916

Knut A. Lundene, who has been a resident of Mitchell County for the past sixty-six years, passed away at his home in the third ward of Osage some time during last Friday. Mr. Lundene and his son Andrew had been living together at the home in town and the son had been away all day at work, as was his custom. Upon his return in the evening it was the habit of the father to meet him with a lantern as he approached the house. On this evening he failed to appear and upon entering the house the son found his father lying dead on the floor. He had passed away suddenly. He had not been dead many hours, however, as neighbors had seen him about the place between 3 and 4 o’clock in the afternoon. At the time of his death on November 2, 1916, was 72 years, 6 months and 21 days of age.

The deceased was born in Bagn, Valdres, Norway on May 19, 1844 to Anders Knutsen Lundene and Olia Knutsdatter Thoen. He came to this country with his parents in 1850 and settled at Springdale, near Mt. Horeb, WI. His father died in a runaway accident in 1867 when his horses bolted and he was thrown from the load.

On March 29, 1868 he was united in marriage with Gunhild Hendriksdatter Fekjaer from Hedalen Norway. The couple moved to Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa in 1869 and Mr. Lundene resided there until April 1915, when he moved to Osage.

In his wedlock four children were born, his son Andrew being the only one surviving. A daughter, Gyda Otilie died in infancy and two young sons, Hendrik and Orinton, drowned accidentally while crossing the Cedar River in 1898. Mrs. Lundene passed away on March 18, 1913.

The deceased is survived by three brothers and two sisters: Anton, of Floyd County, Iowa; Christopher, of St. Ansgar; Gabriel, of North Dakota; Mrs. Guline (Ingeborg) Jeglum, of Montana; and Mrs. Carrie Solomon of St. Ansgar.

A short service was held at the home Saturday afternoon, and the remains were then taken to the Rock Creek Lutheran church, where the Rev. Urness preached the funeral sermon. Interment was in the Rock Creek cemetery.
