Warren "Pete" Hulshizer
Warren `Pete' Hulshizer, 87, of Northwood, Iowa, passed away Wednesday evening (Oct. 4, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Kathryn Larson officiating. Burial will be in Deer Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Carpenter. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, U.S. Highway 65 South, Northwood.
Warren was born April 3, 1908 to Fred Hulshizer and Rosa Aderhold Hulshizer in Reinbeck, Grundy County, Iowa. He went to schools in Thornton, Iowa and #3 rural school in Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa. He graduated from Otranto High School in May of 1926. Warren rode his pony 14 miles every day so he could go to high school in Otranto. He enjoyed being in class plays, spirituals and dramas.
He was rightfully proud of the fact that he drove to Waverly, Iowa alone with the information and data to have the first annual published from Otranto High School.
He married Gladys Gordon on Dec. 18, 1929, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, where he was also baptized and confirmed. Two children were born to them, Marvyl Hulshizer, St. Ansgar, Iowa and Marvin Hulshizer, Georgetown, Texas. Warren and his wife farmed on the same farm in Deer Creek Township for 50 years. After he quit farming on his own, he worked as a hired hand for several farmers, as he truly enjoyed the farm.
They moved to a house in Northwood in March of 1980. Then in May of 1993 they sold their house and moved into the Maple Court Apartments, part of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, their present residence. Warren and his wife have been longtime devoted and faithful volunteers in the Lutheran Retirement Home and the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar. They have been constant companions to many, many ailing and failing individuals. They were avid card players with many friends and relatives and when alone, they played Scrabble.
Warren leaves to mourn, his wife, Gladys; a daughter Marvyl and her husband, George Oakland; a son, Marvin and his wife, Sandra (Dohler) Hulshizer; four grandchildren, Judy Shirley and her husband, Joe of Hudson, Iowa; Gary and his wife Julie (Young) Oakland of rural St. Ansgar; Scot and Monica Hulshizer of Georgetown, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Cody, Sadie Mae Oakland, Joshua Warren and Jenna Rae Shirley; four brothers, Fritz of Northwood, Sylvester and his wife, Florence of Sun Prairie, Wis., Harold and his wife, Dorothy of Maustin, Wis., and Dale and his wife, Lois of St. Charles, Minn.; and one sister, Esther Kruse, a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Herbert and Lawrence.
The family suggests memorials to the Deer Creek Lutheran Church Building Fund.
