Thelma Newton

Thelma Irene Newton, 84, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2004, at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf where she was a member or a charity of the donor's choice.

The former Thelma Irene Bilharz was born in Mitchell County, Iowa, on December 6, 1919, the daughter of Louis and Irma (Hoisington) Bilharz. On November 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Keith L. Newton in Colwell, Iowa. Keith preceded her in death on September 18, 2000.

She was employed as an elementary school secretary for the Bettendorf School System, primarily at Lincoln Elementary, for 20 years, retiring some years ago.

Among the things she enjoyed were singing, both as a soloist and in a choir, traveling and the company of her beloved grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and John Page of Florissant, Mo.; her son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Patricia Newton of Donahue, Iowa; her grandchildren and their spouses, Ann and Doug Stark of Bellingham, Wash., Maggie and Chris Rogers of Milan, Illinois, Thomas and Kate Page of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Suzanne Page of Florissant, Missouri; and her great-grandson, Aaron David Rogers.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Clair Bilharz.
