Mercedes (Hubbard) Gilbert, 1916-2004

Mercedes Hubbard Gilbert was born in Osage, Iowa, Jan. 19, 1916, the only daughter of Edward and Alice (Turner) Hubbard. Her only brother, Lynn, preceded her in death.

Mercedes attended public schools in Osage, graduating from high school in 1933. After graduating from Sioux Falls College, she was married to John Gilbert. They attended Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Massachusetts and served a church in New Hampshire until 1954.

Mercedes returned to Iowa in 1955 and began work in the office of the Iowa Baptist Convention, now the Mid-American Baptist Churches. She continued as administrative assistant until her retirement July 1, 1981 when she moved to Ames, Iowa, where she became a resident of the Northcrest Retirement Community. She died at the Northcrest Health Care Center on December 22, 2003.

She is survived by a niece, Lynette Beheler of Trinity, North Carolina.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 in the Green Room of the Northcrest Retirement Community in Ames.

Adams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
