OBITUARY: Elsie Sophia (Arp) Koster, 1899-1981

Mrs. Louis Koster Funeral
Held Here Saturday,
March 28, 1981

Funeral services for Mrs. Louis H. Koster, 81, who died at her home in St. Ansgar March 25, were held March 28 at the St. Ansgar United Methodist church with the Rev. Wittern officiating.

Elsie Sophia Koster was born December 2, 1899 in Traer, the daughter of Julius and Mary Arp. As a young girl she came with her family to live on a farm near Osage.

She married Louis H. Koster February 18, 1922. Five children were born to them. The Koster family farmed east of St. Ansgar until retiring to St. Ansgar in 1951.

Mrs. Koster is survived by her husband, Louis; two daughters, Mrs. Al (Neva) Toppin of Rudd and Mrs. Richard (Donna) Hyland of Hayfield, Minn.; one son, Darwin of St. Ansgar; a brother, Ed Arp of Osage; 16 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sons, Marlin and Delmer.

Burial was in the Osage cemetery with Rev. Wittern in charge of the committal services.

Elsie Sophia Arp Koster

Elsie Sophia Arp was born December 2, 1899 at Traer, Tama County, Iowa to Julius Edward Arp and Margaretha Elizabeth Jansen. She had four brothers:

Henry Peter Arp, Edward William Arp, John B Arp and George A Arp. The family can be found in the 1900 and 1910 censuses at Homer township, Benton County, Iowa.

About 1911, the family moved by train to Burr Oak Township, Mitchell County, Iowa where they bought a farm. Sophia can be found living here in the 1915 and 1920 censuses.

Sophia married Louis Herman Koster on February 18, 1922 at Mitchell Co, Iowa. They moved to a farm east of St Ansgar, Iowa in Mitchell township and can be found there in the 1925 and 1930 censuses. They had five children:
Marlin Louis (born September 28, 1922, married Marjorie Ann Lowe, died September 3, 1957 Mitchell, Iowa);
Delmer Dean (born August 30, 1924 Mitchell, Iowa, married October 1946 to living
Nicholson, died June 28, 1968 Mitchell, Iowa);
a daughter and a son, both still living;and
Donna Mae (born May 3, 1930 Mitchell, Iowa, married living Hyland, died September 25, 1999 Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota).

After retirement, Elsie and Louis moved into a home at St Ansgar, Iowa in 1951. She died March 25, 1981 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. She was buried at the Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.

Her husband, Louis Herman Koster was born November 28, 1900 at Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa to Herman Louis Koster and Jennie Storie. He died May 28, 1981 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa and is also buried at the Osage City Cemetery.
