St. Ansgar, Iowa -- Mr. and Mrs. Joe Slaichert of St. Ansgar were advised that their son, Harley, 23, was killed in action on December 6, [1942]. He was in the army and had been in the service a year. Harley had written his parents just before his death that he was in New Guinea.
He was born in Mitchell county and attended schools at Mitchell, Iowa. The family moved to a farm about three miles north of St. Ansgar about three years ago.
Surviving besides has parents are two brothers, Joe and William, at home, and three sisters,
Mrs. Helen Winterton, Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Georgia Weed, Osage; and Anna, at Chicago, Illinois.

To Hold Memorial Rites for Harley Slaichert
St. Ansgar - Memorial services for pfc. Harley Slaichert, son of Mr. and Mrs.** Joe Slaichert of St. Ansgar, were to be conducted Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Church at 2 o'clock. The Reverend W. F. Belling was to officiate, assisted by members of the Walter T. Enneberg post of the American Legion.
Slaichert was killed in action in New Guinea December 6, 1942.

Rites for GI at St. Ansgar
St. Ansgar, Iowa — The body of Pfc. Harlan George Slaichert, 28 [SIC], was laid in its final resting place in the City cemetery here Tuesday following services at the home of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Slaichert, and at the Methodist Church.
Pfc. Slaichert was killed in action in New Guinea December 6, 1942. He served in a machinegun unit, being inducted Jan. 3, 1942. He worked on his father's farm until he entered the army.
Besides his parents he leaves three sisters and two brothers.

HARLEY SLAICHERT MEMORIAL
SERVICE, ST. ANSGAR SUNDAY
A memorial service is being planned for Private Harley Slaichert at the Methodist church in St. Ansgar, Sunday, April 11, 1943. The service will be under the direction of the St. Ansgar post of the American legion, with the Rev. Belling officiating.
Private Slaichert was killed in New Guinea, on December 6, 1942, the same day General Hanford McNider received his wounds. Word was received from the War Department December 27, stating that Private Slaichert had been killed in the attack on Buna.
He left St. Ansgar January 3, 1942, driving to Osage to be inducted with a group from this county. he had no leave during the three months he remained at Camp Roberts, California, before embarking for the southwest Pacific.
Private Slaichert is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Slaichert, St. Ansgar; two brothers and three sisters. His parents; Joe Jr. and William live on the family farm a mile north of St. Ansgar. His sisters, Mrs. Paul Ballard, lives in Chicago, Mrs. C. Winterton, in Kansas, and Mrs. Melburn Weed, in Osage.
It is expected that all the family will be present at the service with exception of Mrs. Ballard.
