Funeral services for Charles M. Culbertson, 83, who died Monday, October 3 at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital in Osage following major surgery were held Thursday, October 6 at the Deer Creek Lutheran church with the Rev. Henry Erickson officiating.
Pallbearers were Olaf Anderson, Curtis Taylor, Harold Brown, Leonard Larson, George Parkhurst and George Davis. The Mitchell County mail carriers were honorary bearers.
Mrs. Leonard Larson and Mrs. Olaf Anderson were in charge of the floral arrangements, and music was furnished by the Dahls of Lyle.
Charles Martin Culbertson was born two miles southwest of Carpenter, just over the line in Worth County, February 16, 1877, the son of Nels and Carrie Culbertson, pioneers in the area, who came here from Norway and homesteaded in Worth County. Mr. Culbertson was the youngest and last survivor of a family of nine children. After he received his education in the country school he farmed his father's homestead. On November 17, 1900 he married Lucina Strand of Mona, and continued to farm until he accepted the position of rural mail carrier in 1905 and moved to Carpenter. In 1940 he retired after 36 years of service.
Mr. and Mrs. Culbertson were pirvileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1950. He was a lifelong member of the Deer Creek Lutheran church where he served as a deacon and trustee, and was financial secretary for many years. He was an active member of the Rural Letter Carriers association for 30 years. He also belonged to the Woodmen's Lodge, and held various non-elective offices in town.
Survivors are his wife, Lucina; five children, Mrs. Enid Thompson of Chester; Mrs. Dave (Ruth) McGreevy of Mankato, Minnesota; Nuel of Chicago; Russell of Seattle, Washington and Claude of Little Cedar; also 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, five sisters, and two children, Ina and Oral.
Burial was in the family lot in the First Lutheran cemetery in St. Ansgar with Rev. Erickson in charge of the committal services.
