Hugh M. Babcock

Hugh M. Babcock was born January 5, 1866, to William and Mary Babcock, at Elmira, Erie County, New York. He died Friday morning, January 21, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred L. Hansen, at St. Ansgar, at the age of 83 years and 16 days. He had suffered a heart attack the day before Christmas and was taken to the Mitchell County Memorial hospital, where he was cared for before being taken to his daughter's home.

November 4, 1891, he was united in marriage to Edith K. Emerson and they began their life together in a log house near what is now Little Cedar. To this union five children were born. Seven years ago the couple celebrated its 50th wedding anniversary.

Hugh spent a number of years working for the railroad, farming and for several years operated the grist mill near Little Cedar before moving to Little Cedar about 15 years ago.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Edith; two daughters, Mrs. Ray Potter (Blanche), Waterloo; Mrs. Alfred L. Hansen (Merna), St. Ansgar; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were two daughters, Luella and Matilda; a son, Vinton; three brothers, Orrin, Hanson and Frank; three sisters, Susan, Matilda and Nellie. He was the last of a family of seven children.
