OBITUARY: Ralph Kenneth Brandt

Ralph K. Brandt Funeral Held September 12

Funeral services for Retired Navy Capt. Ralph K. Brandt, 65, of Charleston, S.C., who died at a Charleston hospital September 9, were held September 12 at the graveside at Carolina Memorial Gardens in Charleston.

Ralph Kenneth Brandt was born March 15, 1915 in Austin, Minn., the son of the late Herman and Selma M. Brandt. He was a graduate of St. Ansgar high school, and graduated from the University of Iowa School of Law in 1939. Mr. Brandt practiced law for four years before being elected the youngest judge in Iowa.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was assigned to [the Judge Advocate General's] office in 1947 and held a number of legal positions for the Navy. He retired from the Navy in 1972. Mr. Brandt was a member of Lions Club, Elks Club, American Legion, Association of Retired Persons, Retired Officers Association and the Navy League.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Irene Chitwood Brandt of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Gary L. Brandt of Honolulu; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Suzanne Sumler of Daytona, Florida; two grandchildren.

NOTE: The Oelwein Daily Register, Tue., May 31, 1966, reported that Mrs. Ralph (Genie) Brandt, formerly of Oelwein, died Saturday, May 28, 1966 in Charleston, S.C. She was survived by her husband, Capt. Ralph K. Brandt and two sons, Joe, 24, and Gary, 18. The body was flown to San Diego, Calif. for burial in the Ft. Roscrane National Cemetery. The article said that the Brandts moved to Oelwein in the fall of 1939 where Ralph practiced law, later being elected as judge of the superior court here. But he never seved in that capacity as he joined the navy in which he has served ever since. They had resided in Charleston for several years, the article said.
