Ross Elliott Harmon, age 87, of Osage, died Friday, October 16, 2009, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2009, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Pastor Wendy Johannesen officiating. Burial was at the Osage Cemetery with military honors by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.
Ross was born July 2, 1922, in Burr Oak Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of William and Grace (Angell) Harmon. He was baptized and confirmed in the First United Methodist Church in Osage. Ross graduated from Osage High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific area as a motor machinist. After the war, he returned to the Osage area and engaged in farming.
He married Kathryn Kitson on November 26, 1949. They farmed in Burr Oak Township and retired to Osage in 1984. Later, in addition to farming, he sold seed corn in the area for over 20 years. In his younger years, Ross enjoyed hunting and trapping. He was a charter and life member of the Osage V.F.W. and held the office of squad commander for many years. Ross was also a member of the Orchard American Legion.
Ross is survived by his wife, Kathryn Harmon of Osage; three daughters, Linda Lines and fiancé, Jeffrey Mondry of Rudd, Mary Kay Erdmann and husband, Kenneth of Plymouth, Janice Henik and husband, John of Mount Vernon; three grandsons, Brad Lines, Douglas Erdmann and Joshua Henik; three granddaughters, Erin Lines Myers and husband, Jerry, Dawn Erdmann and Kara Henik; and two great-grandsons, McCain and Truman Myers. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements made by Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home (641)732-3706.
