Cynthia (Courtwright) Shaw, 1833-1903
Mrs. J. Shaw
Cynthia Courtwright was born in the state of New York, Aug. 1st. 1833. When about thirteen years of age she came to Wisconsin, and in 1852 at Oshkosh she was married to J. Shaw. In 1863 she came with her husband to Minnesota, and the next year settled near Walnut Lake, Wells, Minn., where they continued to reside until a few weeks ago, having gone there at an early time and having secured their land from the government, they experienced the inevitable hardships of pioneer life. Mrs. Shaw had her full share of the burden.
She was the mother of four children, three of whom are still living, Mrs. Edwin Rice, Emma Grynolds, both of Wells, Minn., and Mrs. Robert McLean of Osage, Iowa. Ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, also three brothers survive her.
In 1868, she with her eldest daughter united with the Baptist church and were baptized in Walnut Lake, near their home. She loved her church and would often walk two or three miles to attend its services, and though modest and retiring her voice was often heard in testimony and prayer, witnessing to her Lord.
On March 1st her husband died, which proved a severe shock to her. About two weeks ago she came to live with her daughter, Mrs. McLean, and although all that was possible was done to spare her, the Father willed it otherwise and March 27 she quietly passed away.
The funeral service, conducted by Rev. D. I. Coon, was held at the home of Robert McLean on Tuesday morning, and the body was taken to Wells, Minn. to be placed beside that of her husband.
