Marie Severson, 1840-1929
Marie Severson was born in Ulvik, Hardanger, Norway on November 26, 1840. She spent the days of her childhood and youth in the parental home. On November 15, 1864 she was married to Thorbjorn Severson of her native place. After their marriage they continued to live at Ulvik for about eleven years before coming to America.
On their arrival in America in 1875, they located temporarily in Decorah, Iowa, later coming to Mitchell County and settling on their farm in Rock Township. This place was her home until her death.
To Mr. and Mrs. Severson, three children were born. Their first child died in infancy, and Sever, the second child, died in 1895. Mr. Severson preceded her in death on October 11, 1894. The only near relative surviving is her son, Olaf, with whom she has made her home during all these years, and who, with love and devotion has provided for all of her wants and given her the best of care.
Mrs. Severson has been a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church since coming to this community.
With the exception of the first year in this country, she has enjoyed good health. During the last year her strength has gradually failed and she has been confined to her bed most of the time. However, her mind remained bright until her peaceful departure on December 27, 1929. The cause of her death was the infirmities of old age.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. O.C. Myhre at the church on December 30, 1929. Interment was made in the Rock Creek Lutheran cemetery.
