Minona Emilie Frieda Dettmann was born March 24, 1929, at St. Mary's Hospital in Watertown, Wisconsin, to Arthur W. and Adelheid O. (Klemke) Dettmann of rural Johnson Creek, Wisconsin. She was baptized on April 29, 1929, and confirmed on March 29, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown, Wisconsin.
She grew up on the family farm, graduated from the eighth grade at the Rock River Valley School and in 1946 graduated from Johnson Creek High School. In 1946 and 1947 she attended Wartburg College and subsequently graduated from the Milwaukee Hospital (Passavant) School of Nursing in 1950. On June 29, 1952, she married Richard E. Zellmer of Moville, Iowa.
Minona entered eternal life on October 17, 2009, after a five-week illness with cancer.
As the oldest of seven children, family became an important part of Minona's life which continued through her commitment to her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Minona's parents supported her childhood dream of pursuing an education to become a nurse. She dedicated her professional nursing career to caring for patients in hospitals and nursing homes in Milwaukee, Wis., Seguin, Texas, Dubuque, Wausau, Wis., Monticello, West Union and until 1999 at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
She lived out her faith and devotion to the church with many activities, from Luther League as a youth to creating baptismal banners, and even in her later years leading women's circle Bible studies and organizing and baking for the church fellowship hour. Her yeast breads and treats will long be remembered by many. She also loved gardening and was a skilled seamstress.
Survivors include two sons, Mark (Debra Daehn) Zellmer of La Crosse, Wis., and grandchildren, Timothy of St. Paul, Minn., and Bethany of La Crosse, Wis., and Joel (Jodi) Zellmer and granddaughter, Emma, of Liberty Lake, Wash.; two daughters, Kristin Brown (Jacki Ebbeka) of Laramie, Wyo., and grandson Eric (Cambria) Zellmer with great-granddaughter Ava, of Laramie, Wyo., and Heidi Zellmer and grandson Jared Zellmer of Charles City.
Minona is also survived by siblings Joanne (Harry) Ballard of Moneta, Va., Faith Yops of Roanoke, Ind., Paul (Margaret) Dettmann of Dubuque, Timothy (Amy) Dettmann of Johnson Creek, Wis., and Daniel (Shirley) Dettmann of Madison, Wis., and sister-in-law Evelyn Dettmann of Watertown, Wis., along with several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frederick Dettmann; her husband of 40 years, the Rev. Richard Zellmer, and a brother-in-law, Robert Yops Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be directed to First Lutheran Church or the Good Samaritan Center Endowment for nursing scholarships, both in St. Ansgar.
