Bertha Helen (Johnson) Larson

Mrs. Peter B. Larson died at her home south of Osage last Friday, after a long period of poor health. Her illness began following and automobile accident in which she suffered a broken vertebra. Soon after she was brought home from the hospital at Rochester other trouble developed.

Bertha Helen Johnson Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Johnson, was born in Cedar Township, Mitchell County on December 15, 1877. She was baptized and confirmed in the Rock Creek Lutheran church, and her whole life was spent in this community.

She received her education in the rural schools and in the Cedar Valley seminary. She taught the rural schools of Cedar Township for eight years.

On February 27, 1906 she was married to Peter B. Larson.

On November 19, 1938, she suffered a stroke from which she never recovered, passing away on April 7th. The cause of her death was heart disease with complications.

Besides her husband, three children survive: Dr. John Larson of Duluth, Minnesota, Mary and Philip at home. Also one brother, O.J. Johnson, of this vicinity, and five sisters: Mrs. Nellie Wood of Colfax, Iowa; Mrs. Lewis Field of Manly, Iowa; Mrs. Eric Wahl of Otranto, Iowa; Miss Clara Johnson of Maywood, Illinois; and Mrs. Olive Howe of Osage.

Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. O.C. Myhre at the family home at 1 o’clock and at the Rock Creek Lutheran church at 1:30 p.m. on April 10th.

Interment was made in the Rock Creek Lutheran cemetery.

Brita (Breta, Brithe) Helen Johnson was born December 15, 1877 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Lars Helgeson Johnson and Ingeborg Andrea Tollefsen, the oldest of their four daughters. Breta also had three half-siblings as her father was married twice.

She was baptized at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. Her baptismal sponsors were: Mr and Mrs Theodore Tollefson and Mr and Mrs Ole Johnson.
She was confirmed on April 1, 1894 at Rock Creek Lutheran.

Found in the 1880 - 1930 censuses living on her father's farm at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1880: L. H. Johnson 45, Isabel Johnson 31, Nelli Johnson 11, Hanne Johnson 9, Ole Johnson 8, Hellen Johnson 2, Estela Johnson 3m, Ole Iverson 27.

1895: Helen Johnson age 17.

1900: Lars H Johnson 65, Andrina I Johnson 51, Ole J Johnson 28, Helen B Johnson 22, Estelle C Johnson 20, Clara L Johnson 18, Olive A Johnson 11.

Breta married Peter Bastian Larson on February 27, 1906 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

The couple had 3 children: John Bastian, Mary Annabel and Philip Harold.

Found in the 1910 - 1930 censuses at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1910: Peter Bastian Larson 45, Breta Helen Johnson Larson 32, Anna Pedersdatter Nordhus Larson 81, Eric L. Wahl 31.

1915: Mrs Helen Larson age 37.

1920: Peter B Lorson 55, Helen J Larson 42, John B Larson 9, Mary A Larson 6, Philip H Larson 3 yrs 5 mos.

1925: Peter B Larson 60, Hellen B Larson 47, John B Larson 14, Mary H Larson 11, Philip H Larson 8.

1930: Peter B Larson 65, Helen J Larson 52, John B Larson 19, Mary A Larson 16, Philip H Larson 13.

Breta Larson died April 7, 1939 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
