MISS EMMA LANE

Miss Emma Lane, age 88, died on Tuesday, April 12, 1966, at a nursing home in Osage, Iowa.

Emma was the daughter Hans and Mary Lane, and was born on March 13, 1878. She had two brothers, Louis and Carl.

A resident of St. Ansgar, Iowa, and formerly of Otranto, she is survived by nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 15, 1966, at St. Ansgar.

Emma had once served as treasurer of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.). She was also a member of Garden Club, and was a frequent speaker and judge of flowers at fairs. She had also served as Mitchell County Recorder, and a member of the Senior Citizen Extension Group. She served on the Historical Committee for the St. Ansgar Centennial. At one time she taught classes in how to make tailored finishes in women's garments. She was a member of the Farm Bureau Women.

EMMA LANE, 88 RETIRED COUNTY RECORDER DIED

Funeral services for Miss Emma Lane, 88, were held Friday at the Schroeder and Houg Funeral home in St. Ansgar. The Rev. Eugene Schmidt, pastor of the Otranto Community church was in charge. Burial was at First Lutheran cemetery in St. Ansgar. (1966)

Miss Lane died Tuesday at the Osage Nursing Home. She was a resident there since shortly after she became ill in March, 1961.

Emma Lenore Lane was born March 13, 1878, at the Lane farm south of St. Ansgar, the daughter of Hans K. and Mary Nelson Lane. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran church by the Rev. Johann Olsen. She received her education in the Olin school, public schools of St. Ansgar, St. Ansgar Seminary, State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls, and Northwestern University in Chicago.

She taught in the schools of Mitchell county, in Duluth, Minn.; and Portland,, Ore. Later she served as recorder in Mitchell county and was a secretary.

She left her teaching position in Portland, Ore. to care for her parents. After their death she made a home for her brother Lewis on their farm in Otranto township. Several years were spent on a claim at Warren, Minn. and there she was interested in bringing rural schools to that area. A trip to Europe made possible her attendance at the Passion Play at Oberamergau in 1910.

Miss Lane was a charter member of the St. Ansgar Women's club and St. Ansgar Garden club. She was interested in community work, working in 4-H club work, coaching home talent plays and giving readings from her "Scrap Book of Memories" at many community gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, and two nephews.

Survivors include six nieces and one nephew: Mrs. Cora Wahl, Mrs. Mae Larson of St. Ansgar, Dr. A. H. Groth, Columbia, Mo.; Mrs. Glenn Toolson of Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. James Chase of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mrs. Herbert Joes of La Porte, Ind. and Mrs. Charles Peterson of Osage.
