OBITUARY: E. M. "Mat" Newhouse, 1862-1937

Our community is again in mourning. This time we record the passing of E.M. Newhouse, who was seriously injured in the auto accident October 1, 1937, when his wife was instantly killed.

That day Mr. Newhouse was taken to the hospital at New Hampton, Iowa. There he received the best of care but to no avail. He passed to his reward October 7, 1937.

Elijah Madison Newhouse was born at Pleasant Grove, Iowa, February 16, 1862. He was united in marriage to Jessie M. Terpstra in the year of 1890, and lived in Nebraska, later moving to Colfax, Iowa, coming to McIntire in February, 1910, where they had resided since. There were three children born to this union, one daughter, Mary, preceding him in death in the year 1917.

Surviving are his two sons, Mayo and Paul and their families, including 12 grandchildren; one brother, Frank Newhouse, of Broken Bow, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Beckman of Broken Bow, Nebraska; Mrs. Laura George, of Escondido, California; and Mrs. Stella Denham of Massena, Iowa, and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at McIntire, Iowa, Monday afternoon, October 11, 1937, conducted by Rev. Eaton, pastor, and Rev. Bodenham.

NOTE: These were found in a scrapbook, dated 1937. The obituaries were not very complete, but there were accompanying newsclippings so I put the information together. I am not a relative.
