Minna Laura Riccius was born on March 3, 1873, in Lowell, Mass., to Mr. and Mrs. Gus Riccius. As in infant she was baptized into the Christian faith and in childhood shemoved with her parents to Providence, R.I. Here she grew to young womanhood and as a young lady became a dressmaker.
Here, too, she met and married George Gutmann, on May 3, 1896. Four days later they came to St. Ansgar. They established a bakery which the operated for 31 years. Five children were born to this union.
Mrs. Gutmann became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church on May 3, 1903, under Pastor William Janzow, and she was a faithful and active member. Almost three years ago she and her husband observed their golden wedding anniversary. About two and a half years ago Mrs. Gutmann submitted to two major operations. Complications which developed caused her much suffering and also led to her death. Since January she had been bedfast.
Surviving are her husband and five children, Mrs. Christ (Esther) Klindt of St. Ansgar, George of Ames, Mrs. Olin (Harriet) Machlan of St. Ansgar, Viola, and instructor in the high school at Story City, and Herman of Cedar Rapids. There are also nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Zeiner of Somerville, N.J. and Mrs. Harriet Lang of Sea Girt, N.J., who survive.
