NEWSPAPER ARTICLE--

"Road is clear, straight"

AUSTIN, MINNESOTA — The Highway patrol continued an investigation Monday into the cause of a Three-car crash that killed five Iowans on a straight stretch of 218 six miles south of here Saturday night. There was no immediate explanation for the fair-weather crash, which occurred four miles south of the scene of a collision that killed six persons one year ago.

Four of the victims, from Osage, were Lloyd L. Olson, 43, and his wife, Laurine, 41, and Varren K. Pederson, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 41.

The fifth victim was Virgil D. Horgen, 38, St: Ansgar. The only survivor, who was not injured, was Ray A. Hanson, 61, Marshalltown.

The Osage victims were in a northbound car, and Horgen was traveling south, alone in his auto, Mower County Sheriff Doyle Lindahl said the two North Iowa autos collided nearly headon.

Hanson was driving behind the Olson car at the time of the crash, arid part of the Olson auto came down on top of Hanson's vehicle. Lindahl called the crash the worst he had ever seen. Hanson said when the crash occurred "it seemed like the whole. world exploded in front of me.

Authorities could give no reason for the mishap. The road is straight and the weather was good. Just a year ago this month six persons were killed in an accident on the same highway about six miles from the scene of the Saturday night tragedy. The two Osage couples were going to a barn dance square dance festival at a place on Highway 218 south of Austin where they had attended dances previously.
