Opal Mae Heard Chancellor

ST. ANSGAR - Mae Chancellor, 74, died Friday (August 14, 1998) in a two-vehicle collision near Mona that also killed her friend, Virgina Lemmermann, and injured her sister-in-law, Mary Chancellor, of St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Ansgar Untied Methodist Church with the Reverend Ted Stowers offiiciating.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mae Chancellor was born on a farm east of Carpenter in 1923, the daughter of Madge (Goff) and Walter Heard. She graduated from Carpenter High School in 1941. She graduated from Mason City Junior College in 1943, and started a teaching career that spanned 28 years. She received her B.S. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1971.

On August 25, 1946, Opal Mae Heard married Robert Hickle Chancellor, and the couple lived in the St. Ansgar area until Mr. Chancellors's death in 1990.

Mae was baptized and confirmed in the St. Ansgar Methodist Church by the Reverend Henry Allshouse in 1936. She remained active in her church throughout her life, serving as church organist, long-time president of the United Methodist Women, Morning Circle member and was a 50-year member of I. C. Club and her church choir.

She was an active community member, having served as a Girl Scout leader, a president of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Nissen Library Board and as a volunteer choir leader for residents of the Good Samaritan Center.

Her parents and her husband as well as two brothers-in-law preceded her in death: Richard Chancellor of St. Ansgar, Duane Burton of Seattle and her sister-in-law, Irma Chancellor of Nevada.

Her two daughters survive her, Martha Chancellor and her husband, Denis Boerjan, of St. Ansgar, and Margaret Chancellor Caldwell and her husband, Randy, of Newton; as well as her sister, Elizabeth Heard Burton of Seattle, Washington. Mae Chancellor's grandchildren are Katie and Ann Pleggenkuhle of St. Ansgar and Betsy and Bob Caldwell of Newton. Her sister-in-law, Mary Chancellor, is in critical condition in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.
