ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — W. Edson Dockstader, 68, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Edward Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Edson (Doc) was born on Dec. 23, 1929, to Wilmer Lot and Caroline (Hansen) Dockstader, in the family home in St. Ansgar.

He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1947 and received his doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1955 from Iowa State University. While at I.S.U., Doc enjoyed playing college football until he was sidelined with a knee injury, and he was a founding member of the Beta Sigma Psi fraternity.

Doc married Becky Marie Gruhn on April 18, 1953, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Following Doc's graduation, they moved to New Orleans, La., where he was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Camp LaRoy Johnson, Port of Embarkation. They returned to St. Ansgar in August of 1957, where he established his veterinary medicine practice.

Doc bred and raised registered Quarterhorses from 1967 through 1992. A lot was learned and much fun was had by family and friends alike at the XD Quarterhorse ranch.

He will be warmly regarded and held close in the hearts of his family and friends as we celebrate his life as a love that will never die.

He is survived by his wife, Becky, of 45 years; six daughters, Chris and her husband, Larry Wadman, of Annandale, Minn.; Julie and her husband, Melvin Schroeder, of St. Ansgar; Mary and her husband, Allen Sommerfeld, of Weilerbach, Germany; Holly and her husband, Rick Schwarck, of St. Ansgar; Kelly and her husband, Sean Shanahan , of Hull, Mass.; and Wendie Dockstader, of Iowa City, Iowa; two sons, Peter Dockstader, of Des Moines, Iowa, and John and his wife, Lisa, Dockstader, of St. Ansgar; 15 grandchildren that will remember his gentleness, kindness and "sweet" generosity; and one brother, Wilmer Beldon and his wife, Geraldine Dockstader, of San Diego, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Winifred Dockstader; and one grand-daughter, Molly Schroeder.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.
