CLEAR LAKE, IOWA — Luella Dunlay, 85, of Clear Lake, and formerly of Mitchell county, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Oakwood Care Center.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m.Wednesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 2985 360th St., New Haven, Iowa, with the Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Inurnment will be at the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service.
Luella was born March 2, 1919, in New Haven, Iowa, the daughter of William and Anna (Cashman) Marr. She attended St. Mary’s Academy in New Haven. She also attended Mount Mercy to become a teacher. Luella taught in rural schools around the New Haven area.
She married James “Jim” Dunlay November 3, 1942, in New Haven where they farmed until moving to Waterloo in 1956. Luella also taught school in Waterloo. In 1967 they moved to Postville where she taught in the Postville School District. They moved to Manson, living there until 1992 when they moved to Woden. They have lived in the Clear Lake area since 2001.
Luella loved teaching, her students, playing the piano, and traveling and camping in their younger years. She was a very good cook and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was very devoted to her Catholic faith. Luella was a member of the CD of A in various communities and active in all senior citizens centers where she lived.
Luella is survived by her husband Jim Dunlay, Clear Lake; three children, Ronald Dunlay and his wife, Sue, Fort Madison, Kathy Mortensen and her husband, Ken, Ventura, and John Dunlay and his wife, Debbie, Cheyenne, Wyo.; fifteen grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Derek, Sara and her husband, Ryan, Ronnie, Joe, Bridget, Angela, Chris, Kristi, Aaron, Nate and his wife, Heather, Chad, Amy, Shelly and her husband, Fred, David and his wife, Joy, and Patricia; nine great-grandchildren Alyssa, James, Anthony, Jordan, Hunter, Tucker, Sarah, Evan and Ethan; three sisters, Gertrude Meirick, Mary Miller and Grace Fox; and several nieces and nephews.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Urban, Francis and Vincent.
