MASON CITY, IOWA — Genevieve A. (Callahan) Wardell, 75, of South Sioux City, Nebraska, formerly of Osage and Mason City, died unexpectedly on Friday, April 16, 2004, at her home.
Her funeral was held on Wednesday, April 21, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Father Timothy Hogan officiating. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 20, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
She was born April 4, 1929, in Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa, the daughter of Gerald and Ann (Connell) West. She grew up in Osage and Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1947. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Iowa.
She married Patrick Callahan in 1949, and later married Lyle Wardell in 1966 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He died in December 2001 in Sioux City.
She worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone for several years and then worked in the communications office of the Sioux City Police Department for many years. She was a member of the Catholic faith. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, crocheting, reading, golfing and bowling.
She is survived by one daughter, Christina Alvano and her husband, Michael, of Omaha, Neb.; four sons, Matthew Callahan, of Greeley, Colo., Mark Callahan, and his wife, Michele, of Sioux City, Michael Callahan, of Huntsville, Ala., and Jack Wardell and his wife, Holly, of South Sioux City, Neb.; one brother, James West, of Sioux City; two sisters, Nancy Noonan, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Sally Musco, of Chico, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, Michael, Casey and Amy Alvano, Meagan, Ian, Lindsay, David, Alex, Bentley and Westin Callahan, Cody, and Jordyn Wardell, and Michael Paul Callahan; one great-grandson, Kaleb Callahan.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be given to the Queen of Peace.
