MORRISSEY

Mary Ann Curtain was born in Parish, County of Climmen, Ireland, August 10, 1833, and died at her home in Burr Oak Township [Mitchell county, Iowa], March 31, 1906.

When a young girl about twelve years of age she came to American with her parents. She was married to Dennis Morrissey in the early 50's and after living a short period each in Detroit, Michigan and Madison, Wisconsin, they came to Mitchell county, Iowa, and located on their farm in Burr Oak township.

Mr. Morrissey’s death occurred about five years ago. In addition to being one of the pioneer residents of this county they also raised a large family of children, many of whom are still influential citizens of this community.
The names of their twelve children are as follows; Mrs Mary Dillage, Osage; James, John, Thomas and D. C. Morrissey, Brownville; Mrs. Maggie Smith, Osage, Mrs. Julia Devitt, Newhaven; Mrs. Ella Flood, Des Moines;
Mrs. Bridget McSweney, Little Cedar; Tim Morrissey, David; Mrs. Debby Dowd, Brownsville; and Mrs. Kate Titus of California. All were present at the last sad rites of the departed mother except the latter who on account of the great distance was unable to reach her old home in time. Besides these members of the immediate family twenty-eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive.

The funeral occurred at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Newhaven last Monday April 2, 1906.

Rev. Father Barry officiating, interment being made in the cemetery at that place.

The funeral services over the death of this just and good woman was attended by a very large concourse of sorrowing and sympathizing old friends and neighbors.
