OSAGE, IOWA — Sonia Ann Bates, 64, died Wednesday (March 5, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

She was born Aug. 28, 1938, in Osage, the daughter of Martin and Julie (Gunderson) Hultman. Her mother died when Sonia was 9 years old and she went to live with Amy Walling in Orchard. She graduated in 1956 from Orchard High School.

Sonia was united in marriage Dec. 22, 1956, to Gordon Bates at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. They lived in Burchinal for 10 years before moving to a farm southwest of Osage where she spent the remainder of her life.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church Monday.

Sonia is survived by her husband, Gordon Bates of Osage; a daughter, Julia Bierbodt and her husband, Sterling, of Osage, and their children, Brandie, Douglas, Victoria and Jesse; a son, Todd Bates and Sherry of Osage and children, Ashley, Ethan, Jacob, Anna and Rebecca; one great-grandchild, Hannah; one sister, Gloria Thompson of Oregon; and many cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father and a brother, Don Cox
