RICEVILLE, IOWA - Merlyn Leroy Vote, 72, of Riceville, passed away Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, in St. Ansgar, Mitchell county, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Carey officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, with military honors conducted by the Roy Gue Post 244 of Riceville.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home.
Merlyn was born on Nov. 27, 1930, in Pocahontas County, to Clarence Guy Vote and Evelyn Edith Erickson Vote. He attended school in Pocahontas and Burnside and graduated from Riceville High School.
Merlyn was united in marriage to Arlys Moses on Dec. 8, 1951, at the Riceville United Methodist Church.
Merlyn served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953. After returning home, Merlyn worked for the Farmers Telephone Company and was a partner with Kenneth Hammerstrom operating H &V Electric in Riceville.
He and Arlys moved to their present home in August of 1962 and Merlyn began farming. Merlyn retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986. He also operated the Riceville Bowling Alley from 1968 to 1978.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, Arlys, of Riceville; one son, David L. Vote, of St. Ansgar; and one daughter, Lisa and her husband, Darryl Hunt and their two children, Tanner and Ashley Hunt, of Ackley. Also surviving are a sister, Ann Padget and her husband, John, of Waterloo; two brothers, Bernard and his wife, Mary Ann, of Riceville, and Roger and his wife, Mary Lou, of Riceville; and two sisters-in-law, Louise Vote, of Omaha, Neb. and Margaret Vote, of Riceville; and many nieces and nephews.
Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence Jr. and Bruce Vote.
