LeRoy Sherman Johnson, age 88, of Mona, Iowa, died Monday, February 25, 2002, at Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa.
He was born August 21, 1913 to John and Sophie (Erickson) Johnson in Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Deer Creek Lutheran Church. On March 7, 1934 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Mina Eggestein at First Lutheran parsonage in Albert Lea. Twelve children were born to this union. LeRoy and his family lived in the Austin and Rose Creek areas before moving to a farm near Mona, Iowa in June of 1946. He continued to reside there until about four months before his death. In his youth, LeRoy had various jobs as a farm hand; he also spent some time working at the American Gas Company in Albert Lea. In December of 1941 he started work at Geo. A. Hormel & Co. where he was employed until his retirement in 1976. LeRoy enjoyed traveling, mowing his lawn, woodworking and camping with his family. His greatest joy was watching for wildlife on his farm.
Surviving are seven daughters, Lillian (Almo) Jahr, Marlys (Joseph) Follmuth, both of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Darlene Maine of Fresno, California; Grace (Herman) Peterson of Inver Grove Heights; Linda Garvey, Rebecca (Gary) Fredrickson, both of Byron; and Monica (Myron) Hemann of McIntire, Iowa; four sons, Robert (Patti), Wayne (Neilene), David, all of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Lynn (Terri) of Hibbing; also 46 grand-children; 57 great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; one brother, Sander Johnson of Austin; two half sisters, Gladys (Victor) Bruce of Rochester; and Lola Erickson of Austin; one half brother, James Johnson of Austin; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2000; infant daughter, Vivian in 1943; grandson, Wesly Johnson; great grandson, Philip Church; great granddaughter, Melissa Jahr; four brothers, three sisters, one half sister and one half brother.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2002 at Mona Lutheran Church, Mona, Iowa with The Reverend Lydia Mittag officiating. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday and at the church one hour before the service on Friday. Interment is at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona, Iowa.
Memorials are preferred to Mona Lutheran Church.

MONA, IOWA - LeRoy Sherman Johnson, 88, of Mona, died Monday (Feb. 25, 2002) at Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar.
