PEDER E. GROTH

Born Feb. 5, 1830

Died Sept. 17, 1915

Peder E. Groth passed peacefully away Friday evening, Sept. 17th at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Goplerud, with whom he had been living most of the time since his wife, Mrs. Anne Groth, died three years ago. Part of this time, however, he had visited with the other children.

Mr. Groth was born in Sogn, Norway February 5, 1830, where he was baptized and confirmed in infancy. In 1859 he was united in marriage to Anne Opsterdahl. To this union were born twelve children. Four died in infancy and one daughter Mrs. Frank Nicols, went before him thirteen years ago. Seven children survive. They are Mrs. Peter Hildebrand, of Lyle, Minn.; Espan P., James and Mrs. Kelley of Enderlin. N. D.; Mrs. Sim Brandt of Williston, N.D.; Mrs. H. C. Goplerud of Osage, Ia., and Peter Groth of Garry, Minn. Thirty-seven grandchildren also survive him.

He came to America with his family in the summer of 1866. He has lived in Mitchell county ever since. For thirty four years he lived on a farm east of Mona. After he had gained a competency he retired from the farm, fifteen years ago. Part of this time he lived in St. Ansgar. He was a member of the Mona Lutheran church, but after moving to St. Ansgar, he became a member of the church there.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon, Sept. 20, at the H. C. Goplerud home. The services were held by the local pastor, Rev. J. A. Urnes, assisted by Rev. Elmer A. Moe, of Lyle, as the departed one had lived in the pastorate thirty-four years. The remains were taken to St. Ansgar and laid to rest in the family lot in the Lutheran Cemetery, beside his wife. Rev. M. E. Waldeland, his former pastor, officiated at the services at the grave.

Those from out of town who were present at the funeral were: The Hildebrand family, Mr. and Mrs. J. Peterson, and Mr. Bakke, all from Lyle, Minn.; Espen P. Groth and Mrs. Kelley of Enderlin, N.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Sim Brandt of Williston, N. D. and Peter Groth of Garry, Minn.
