On last Saturday afternoon March 4th, 1905 at Ames, Iowa, occured the death of Arthur Gordon Nichols. He had been ill about four weeks and although was tenderly cared for by the family he was at last taken peacfully away.
Deceased was born at Athenstown, Vermont, August 2, 1844. His childhood days were spent on a farm there and after the death of his father which occurred when he was but five years old, he went to live with an uncle.
In the year 1855 he came to Iowa from Vermont with his mother and they settled at Iowa City. After having a pleasant home there for some time death came to them and the mother was called to her last rest. This broke up the home and Mr. Nichols then went back east to live with his uncle, where he stayed until he graduated from the Academy.
For several years he did Evangelistic work along the eastern coast from north to south then he entered Colgate University in the year of '75. In 1879 he graduated from the University and shortly after that came to Iowa, was ordained and then held pastorates at West Union, Plainfield, Riceville, Zion and LeClaire, Iowa and at Buda, Illinois.
At the last named place faiiing health compelled him to give up the ministry and he then removed to Osage.
In 1881 he was united in marriage with Miss Martha Zimmerman in this state and to them were born three children, Charles, Lucian and Howard. Lucian died when a child of seven years but the others survive with the wife to mourn his loss. He also has two brothers living.
The family made their home here until last October when they went to Ames where they made a home for the two boys who attend school there.
The funeral services were held at Ames and the body was brought here last Monday morning. A short service was held Monday morning at the old home in the Third ward and the body was interred in its last resting place in the Osage cemetery beside that of the little son.
