A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at St. Peter Catholic Church in New Haven, Mitchell county, Iowa, for John D. Miles, who died on August 20, 2008.

A graveside committal service with full military honors will be held at 9 a.m. Monday August 25, 2008 at Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois.

John was born May 19, 1921 to Glen and Thelma (Jones) Miles. John graduated from Riceville High School in 1938. He married Mary Colleen "Coke" (Condon) April 15, 1944 in Reno Nevada.

He entered military service during World War II, retiring as a First Sergeant after a twenty year Air Force career. John was the proprietor of the New Haven Tavern following his military career. He operated the tavern through 1985 when he and Coke closed the tavern to retire together.

John is survived by his children; Patricia, Dave and Mike Miles, by his five grandchildren: John David, Maureen, Elizabeth Colleen, Grace and David Michael; by six great-grandchildren; and by three sisters: Erma Jean Downs, Eleanor Bower, and Konnie Russell.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Colleen.

John was a long time member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the New Haven community. Memorial contributions are directed to St. Peter Catholic Church building fund. Condolences may also be sent to the family at www.vogelfuneralhomes.com.

Pursel-Davis Funeral Home is in charge of caring for John and his family.
