Myron Merle “Mike” Meeker, 87 of Austin, Mower county, Minnsota, died on January 9, 2008 at his home at Primrose.
He was born July 11, 1920 to Harry and Esther (Badker) Meeker in Mason City, Iowa. When Myron was in grade school, his family moved to Austin, then to Nora Springs and later to Decorah, Iowa; before moving back to Austin. After graduating from high school in 1938, he went to work for Hormel Foods Corp.
In January of 1942 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the First Marine Division on Guadalcanal and Papua, New Guinea. He was subjected to Japanese aerial bombardment at Cape Sudest, New Guinea and participated in the landing and seizure of Cape Gloucester, New Britain, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge in August of 1944, Mike returned to work at Hormel Foods Corp.
He married Marcella Baldner on Dec. 15, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin with the Reverend William Milbrath officiating.
In 1946 they moved to Osage, Iowa, where they owned and operated a bowling alley with Mike’s parents. In 1949 they moved back to Austin, and Mike returned to work for Hormel. They were blessed with three children, Janelle, Janet and Scott, and six grandchildren. A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mike was on a church bowling league, belonged to American Legion Post 91, VFW Post 1216 and enjoyed doing yard work. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a good friend to many. Blessed be his memory.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella Meeker, Austin; two daughters, Janelle (David) Shaffer, San Diego, Calif., Janet (Gary) Columb, Albuquerque, N.M.; one son, Scott (MaryLynn) Meeker, Webster; five grandchildren, Melinda, Rebecca, Amanda and Thomas Shaffer, Jack Columb, all of San Diego; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Darrell Wherry and Lynn Larson, Osage, Iowa; Dorothy Swenson, Darlene and Harold Trimble, Austin; half sisters-in-law and half brothers-in-law, Janice and James Christiansen, Diane Haseth, Austin; John and Linda Baldner, Tempe, Ariz.; step sister-in-law, Jewel Weeks, Austin; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Harry; sister, Bernadine Veverka; and grandson in infancy, Steven Shaffer.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin with the Reverend William Natzke officiating. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
