Vernice L. Knapp, age 95, of Little Cedar, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2008, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in Little Cedar with Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Inurnment will be at the Little Cedar Cemetery at a later date. There will be a time of fellowship following the memorial service at the church.
Vernice was born October 8, 1912, at Winston, Kentucky, the daughter of Andrew Price and Addie (Turpin) Williams. Vernice started attending school in Little Cedar in the third grade, and graduated from Little Cedar High School. She was married to Kenneth Knapp on June 20, 1936, at the Baptist Church in Osage, by Rev. Tiffany. Vernice was a homemaker and mother who enjoyed singing and music. She played accordion in local dance bands and played on the Little Cedar Women's Baseball Team as a pitcher and a third baseman during her early adult years. She was also a provider of room and board for local teachers. Vernice was a past member of Order of Eastern Star and the Mitchell County Women's Chorus. She was baptized in the Baptist faith and was a member of the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in her adult and married life. She was a member of Women's Society of Christian Service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Knapp (died 1997); a brother, Claude; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Lockie; and an infant brother, Henry.
Vernice is survived by a daughter, Peggy Jacobson of Osage; a son, Richard Knapp of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters, Dawn (Myron) McCartney of Mayflower, Arkansas; Johanna Knapp of Merriam, Kansas; Amanda (Jeff) Harapat of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren, William Echols, Casey Echols, Bethany Harapat.
