December 14, 1933ACCIDENT CLAIM LIVES
TWO YOUNG MEN PAST WEEKWilbur Crockett of New
Haven, and Clayton Nelson,
St. Ansgar. Two young men of this vicinity are dead as results of accidents both of them probably unavoidable and another was seriously injuried in a fall, within as many days. The dead are Wilbur Franklin Crockett, 24 years of age, and Clayton Nelson, 21 year of age.
Wilbur died early Sunday morning at the Nissen hospital from injuries he received when the car he was driving went into a ditch four miles northeast of New Haven. He missed the corner and went off the road. It is believed that the door of the car came open, throwing him out on the ground and jamming him. In the fall, his chest was crushed and a lung punctured.
He was accompanied by Ruth Wattum and Helen Hennessey, neither of whom has serious injuries, although Miss Henessey is suffering severly from shock, and Miss Wattum has some brusies.
The three were going to a dance at Acme when the accident occurred at about 10 o'clock Saturday evening. Crockett was taken to a nearby farm house by one of the Marr boys, who happened along just then, but was removed at once to the hospital, and he died soon after.
Wilbur's father arrived the following day from Sheffield, Ill, and after a service at the Champion funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Stiles Lesly, pastor of the Congregational church, the body was taken to his home for burial.
Wilbur Franklin Crockett, was born Dec. 20, 1910 at LeRoy, Ill. He was the son of Thomas and Margueritte Crockett. The latter of whom passed away when Wilbur was but 7 years of age.
He is survived by his father, two brothers, William David and and Thomas Marvin, a sister, Lea Mae and two half-sisters, Betty and Larraine. He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene.
Wilbur grew to manhood in Henry county, Ill. near the city of Kexanee. He attended the public schools at Annawan and also the Congregational church there. He came to Iowa in the spring of 1928 and first worked in Floyd county, later coming to Mitchell County.
During the past year he has been employed on the James Clark farm, near Orchard.
He was a likeable young man and the large number of friends who were present at the funeral showed to no small extent of the esteem in which he was held.
