Obituary

We were grieved to hear of the sad and sudden death of Father Jones, who quietly passed away June 1st, at his son's home in Stacyville. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community and the many friends that have gathered around them in the years passed.

Rev. Nathaniel Jones was born Nov. 8, 1821, in the state of New York. At the age of three years his mother died and he was given to an aunt, who reared him.

Forty-three years ago he was married to Miss Eliza Ann Waterhouse, who survives him. By this union three children were born, two having passed away twenty years ago. The surviving one is now pastor of the M.E. church of this place. Rev. Jones spent thirty years in the itineracy.

Eighteen years he was a member of the Geneses Conference and the remaining time a member of the Upper Iowa Conference.

His early life was spent on a farm and his advantages were of a meager sort in a new country; but by an earnest effort he demonstrated what may be done by a faithful persistency. As a preacher, he had fine gifts; but the greatest strength consisted in the purity of his living. The deceased at the time of his death was on a visit to his son, whose family is under affliction. He was suddenly stricken with pneumonia on Thursday morning and on Sunday morning passed away in the arms of his son, surrounded by his family.

This will be a sad affliction, not only to his family, but also to his charge, which loses a kind and faithful pastor. This stands as a warning to us all to be ready for the solemn hour of death.

Physically, Mr. Jones was a fine specimen of a man and just before his sickness bid fair for many years. The strong is fallen, and a man full of the holy ghost had passed from our community.

The funeral services were conducted by Presiding Elder Paxton, and the remains were taken to the Osage cemetery for interment.
