John A. "Jack" Smith, 93, of Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 4, 2007, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Emergency Room in Osage.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Visitation was held on Friday evening, October 5th, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and continued one hour before services at the church on Saturday.
John was born on November 17, 1913, at Stacyville, Iowa, the son of Samuel A. and Minnie (Gaffney) Smith.
He married Allegra M. Power on October 10, 1937, in his parent's kitchen in Osage. Jack served for two years in the Army during World War II in Okinawa. He worked for Cedar Valley Produce for 18 years, for North Iowa Quality Egg for twelve years, and for Bud Holling at LeRoy, Minnesota, for six years. Jack then worked for twelve years as a bus driver in Mitchell County for Senior Citizens. He loved his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his great-great-grandchild. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, farming, and listening to western story tapes. In past years, Jack had been a square dance caller. He was a lifetime member of the Osage V.F.W. and the Osage American Legion.
Jack is survived by three daughters: Pauline (Carroll) Winer of Osage, Georgene (Roger) Pitzen of Marion, Jacqueline (Terry) Reams of Osage; by 15 grandchildren; by 41 great-grandchildren; and by one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Allegra; by a daughter, Allegra "Jo" Garrison; by two grandsons, John and Brian Winer; by one great-granddaughter, Kourtney Garrison; by two brothers; and by three sisters.
