Gregory J. Thome

Gregory J. Thome, 82, of Stacyville, died on February 28, 2000, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home. Funeral Services were Thursday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Visitation Church with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in the Visitation Cemetery. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Gregory was born on March 12, 1917 to Frank and Anna (Kasel) Thome in Stacyville. He married Irene Heimer on September 23, 1942 at Visitation Catholic Church. He was an implement mechanic for 40 years, employed by Theobald Implement in Stacyville and self-employed. He was a fireman for 30 years including a position as fire chief. He held jobs as a grain mill operator and as a paper carrier for the Des Moines Sunday Register.

His favorite past times included card playing and cribbage, fishing and turtling, traveling, watching baseball and softball games, picking up aluminum cans.

Gregory was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene (Heimer), 2 brothers, Ray and Norb.

He is survived by 3 sons, Robert Thome and his wife, Sherilyn of Little Falls, MN; Kenneth Thome and wife Janet of Wayzata, MN; Don Thome and wife Eleonore of Las Cruces, NM; 2 daughters, Betty Balke and husband Roger of Stacyville; Pat Adams and husband Joe of Virginia Beach, VA; 14 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; 1 brother, Clarence Thome of Charles City, IA; 1 sister, Eleanor Gerk of Stacyville.
