PROMINENT FARMER
Obituary of Well Known New Haven Man Whose Death We Briefly Noted Last Week

The community was shocked last week Wednesday when word was received that peter Fox was dead. He was taken ill Dec. 14 with pneumonia and despite all that skillful physicians and devoted nursing could do he succumbed to the fatal disease Dec. 20.

In his passing Mitchell county loses one of its most successful farmers and one of its most highly respected citizens, and the church to which he was a life long and devoted member, one of its staunches supporters.

Peter Jr. Fox was born Dec. 15, 1854, in Fon du Lac county, Wis. He was one of ten children, four of whom survive him. In 1877 he came to Mitchell County and located on the farm in Douglas Township, which has ever since been his home. In 1878 he returned to Fon du Lac and was married to Teresa Webber, whom he brought back to his new home in Iowa. To them were born twelve children: Peter J., Mrs. Nora Gilles, Frank C. of Fon du Lac, Wis. John C., Mrs. Mame Gallagher of Waterloo, Herbert, Mrs. Florence Kleckner, Lillan of Portland, Ore.; Caspar, Walter, Ralph and Apolonia who died in infancy.

In all the forty-six years of his residence in Mitchell county Peter Fox took a prominent part in all that pertained to the best interest of the county and the community in which he lived. His kindly disposition and his generous response to every call of charity made him a friend to all who knew him.

The funeral services took place at St. Peter’s church, New Haven, on Saturday, Dec. 23. Solemn High Mass was celebrated by the pastor Father Tebeau, assisted by Fathers O’Brien of Riceville and Martin of Osage, who also preached the funeral sermon. He paid high tribute to the many noble qualities of the deceased, extolling his ardent devotion to church and state.

Over one hundred Knights of Columbus, of which order Mr. Fox was a member, were present from the surrounding parishes of Charles City, Osage and Riceville and friends from all parts of the county crowded the church.

Owing to the non-arrival of his daughter Lillian from Portland the burial services did not take place until Sunday afternoon.

Besides his devoted wife Mr. Fox leaves to mourn his loss eleven children, twenty grandchildren and four brothers, Chris of Riceville, Mat of New Haven, Joseph and Frank of Fon du Lac, Wis.

Truly a grand and a good man has gone to his eternal home.
