W. R. Nicol
William R. Nicol was born in South Hammand, St. Lawrence county, New York, Nov. 6, 1841.
In 1863 he went to Whitewater, Wis., where he enlisted two years later, Feb. 9, 1865, in the 49th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Company K.Three years after the close of the war he came to Iowa, in the fall of 1868, and was married to Josephine E. Fish Aug. 24, 1870. For thirty years they lived on a farm in St. Ansgar township, retiring to a quiet life in Osage in the fall of 1900, and they have since resided here.
Three children were born to this union: Charles C. Nicol, of St. Ansgar; Nellie L. Sides, of Covina, Cal.; and Gertrude G. Waldorn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He died at 4:30 o'clock April 2, 1920, and the funeral was held from the Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the local cemetery.
