Death of L.D. Piper

Thus another old pioneer has answered the last dreaded summons and another link in the chain that binds the past with the present has been sundered. The deceased had been in failing health for several months and as he lay upon his bed of suffering and saw the shadows deepening about him, he could also look back with comforting assurance to a life well spent, fully conscious that having done well by himself he had done equally well by others.

Death has all seasons for its own, but the paradise of heaven is as fair and lovely when winter's winds chill the earth as it is when summer glories crown the hill about us. This is the one happy thought that like a star shines serenely above those who mourn for the Savior and loved ones called away.

Thirty-seven years ago the deceased settled on a farm in Wayne township, where he resided until 1868, when he disposed of the farm and purchased the one adjoining West Mitchell, where he carried on farming continuously with the exception of six years when he served as sheriff of this county. The deceased was born in York county, Maine, in 1829 and was 65 years of age at death. He was married to Mary J. Nason in 1850, and two children were the result of the union.

His wife and daughter, Mrs. John Torsleff are left to mourn his loss, one daughter, Mrs Robert Waddell, deceased. In 1873 he was elected sheriff of Mitchell county and held the office six years, discharging its duties acceptably. At the expiration of his term of office he returned to his farm, which he had successfully conducted. The deceased enjoyed the confidence of all his associates and his death is deeply deplored.

He died at six o'clock Saturday Saturday morning of chronic catarrah of head and stomach, an aliment he had been afflicted with for several years. The funeral services occured Tuesday.
Mr. Piper was an acceptable member of the Congregational church.
