Frank Annis, one of Mitchell county's most useful men, ended his long career last Friday morning, August 31, when he passed quietly and suddenly away while reading a newspaper.

Mr. Annis' health had been bad for several years, and it was known that the end was likely to come at any time, but there had been some recent improvement. The day previous he had been up town, and had walked around in the yard at his residence.

Franklin Wright Annis, the son of Jere Wright and Lucia Hitchcock Annis, was born in Osage, Iowa, on September 29, 1865. He was educated in the public schools of Osage, and in the Cedar Valley seminary, and at the age of 17 entered upon his business career which he carried on actively for the next fifty-two years, entirely in the city of Osage.

In 1882 he entered the employ of the American Express company as agent, continuing there until entering the Osage National Bank in 1888.

In 1892 he became associated with the late James A. Smith, and upon the incorporation of the Jas. A. Smith Lumber company, he was made vice president and general manager, which position he held continuously until his death.

In addition to his activities as a lumberman he was connected intimately with the banking of Mitchell county and was at the time of his death president of the Home Trust and Savings bank and vice president of the Osage Farmers National bank and the St. Ansgar Citizens State bank.

Mr. Annis married Katherine D. Whitaker in 1885, and she survives him, together with a daughter, Mrs. Lester J. Ahrens; three grandchildren, Frank Annis Ahrens, Lester J. Ahrens, Jr., and Jere W. Ahrens; a sister, Mrs. W.D. McCabe, Boulder, Colorado, and a brother, Dr. Homer B. Annis, Minneapolis.

Mr. Annis joined the Congregational church of Osage in 1893, and was for more than forty years an active and loyal supporter of all its activities, being especially interested in its Sunday school, which he taught whenever time and opportunity permitted.

He was a member of Osage lodge No. 102, A.F. & A.M,; Osage chapter No. 36, Royal Arch Masons; Couer de Leon Commandery No. 19 Knights Templar; El Kahir temple Ancient and Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine; and the Modern Woodmen of America."
