JOHN JOSEFSEN KILLED MONDAY - FUNERAL RITES FOR ACCIDENT VICTIM TO BE CONDUCTED FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Struck by a truck as he was crossing the street, John Josefsen, 60, a resident of St. Ansgar, Iowa for many years, was instantly killed at about 5:30 Monday afternoon. Herman C. Glandon, Mason City, driver of the truck has been absolved of any responsibility and the accident was termed unavoidable.
The accident occurred near the Standard Service Station as Josefsen was crossing the street to return to his shoe repair shop. He had been looking at his onion patch which is across the highway and was walking in a southwesterly direction and did not notice the approach of the truck which was coming from the east. According to reports, Glandon swerved as far to the left as he could without hitting a car approaching from the west, but Josefsen was struck by the right door of the truck. The handle on the door caught Josefsen in the back of the head and penetrated the skull to cause instant death. The impact straightened the handle out and put a big dent in the side of the door.
The body was taken to the shoe shop and Coroner Frank R. Shelledy, County Attorney Hearst Duncan and Sheriff Charles Kathan notified. Following examination the body was taken to the funeral parlor.
Glandon, agent and truck driver for Marshall and Swift company, Mason City dry cleaning establishment is well known here, having called on patrons for years. He is married and has two children. His brother, Gaylord, also employed by the dry cleaning company was severely injured in an accident Monday night. He received three broken ribs and fifty cuts when he was blinded by the lights of an approaching car and his truck went into the ditch and overturned several times near Northwood.
Johan Martin Josefsen was born in Denmark, August 17, 1873. He emigrated to America in 1910, living in Chicago for a period and coming to Mitchell county in 1915. He was employed at Otranto on farms for several years and about six years ago started the shoe repair shop here.
Otto Josefsen, a brother, of Benton Harbor, Michigan and John Christianson, a nephew of Union Grove, Wisconsin, arrived here this morning.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Olaf A. Langehough in charge. Interment will be made in the Woodman lot in the St. Ansgar cemetery.
