E. J. Kleinwort is the owner of an excellent farm of three hundred and eighty-five acres, situated on section 5, Newburg township, and is there extensively and successfully engaged in the raising of thoroughbred cattle. He is a progressive business man, alert and energetic, and his well defined plans have resulted in the attainment of substantial success.

He was born May 24. 1876, on the old family homestead in Mitchell county, his father being E. E. Kleinwort, who was born in Hamburg, Germany, and came alone to the new world in 1865, his parents remaining in their native country. However, his brother, A. C. Kleinwort, had preceded him to the United States. E. E. Kleinwort made his way across the country to Wisconsin and from that point came to Mitchell county, Iowa. In the same year his brother, A. C. Kleinwort, and his family established their home in Mitchell county. It was in this county that E. E. Kleinwort was united in marriage to Miss Fredericka Schultz, who was born in Pomerania, Germany, and they became the parents of seven children: Mrs. Elizabeth Follmuth, who is living in Otranto township; A. J., a resident of Newburg township; E. J.; Minnie, the wife of Peter Johnel, whose home is at Moberly, Missouri; Tressie, the wife of William Schauers, of Grafton, Iowa; Lizetta, the wife of Ernest Hollatz; and Fredericka, who died in childhood. In order to support his family Mr. Kleinwort followed the occupation of farming and he also became a stockholder in the creamery at St. Ansgar. He was likewise one of the stockholders in the St. Ansgar Seminary and he was ever interested in the cause of education. He belonged to the German Lutheran church and his political support was given to the democratic party. He was born March 23, 1842, and died on the 2d of November, 1903, while his wife, who was born April 28, 1852, passed away on the 16th of April, 1884.

E. J. Kleinwort acquired a common school education, supplemented by a year's study in the Nora Springs Seminary, and he was thus well qualified for life's practical and responsible duties. Reared on the old homestead, he early became familiar with the best methods of tilling the soil and caring for the crops, and throughout his entire life he has continued in the occupation to which he was reared. In 1899 he purchased one hundred and twenty acres of land from Thor Thompson on section 5, Newburg township, and in 1903 an additional two hundred and sixty-five acres, comprising the old homestead, and has since owned and cultivated this property. He has brought his fields under a high state of development and annually gathers good crops as a reward for the care and labor which he bestows upon his land. In addition to cultivating his farm he is a stockholder in the creamery at St. Ansgar and also in the grain company at Carpenter. He gives the greater part of his attention, however, to the growing of cereals, best adapted to soil and climate, and to the raising of thoroughbred stock, having some very fine cattle upon his place.

On the 11th of June, 1902, Mr, Kleinwort was united in marriage to Miss Elvina Adrian, who was born in Fayette county, Iowa, and became a resident of Grafton, Iowa, when three years of age, but was living in Minnesota at the time of her marriage. Her parents were natives of Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Kleinwort have become the parents of three children: Adrian George, who died in infancy; Edville Earl, who was born November 5, 1908; and Boyd Giles, born June 5, 1916.

The parents are members of the German Lutheran church and Mr. Kleinwort is a director of the consolidated school at Carpenter. His has been a busy, active and useful life and success in substantial measure has come to him as a reward of his unfaltering industry, his close application and his intelligently directed effort.
