During the Civil war the only company of soldiers made up almost entirely of Mitchell county men was Company K of the Twenty-Seventh Iowa Infantry Volunteers. It was recruited by Charles T. Granger and Samuel M. Elliott, of Mitchell. Granger was elected captain, and served in that position for three years. He was highly respected by his men. They always rejoiced when he could attend their reunions.

He was born in Monroe county, New York, October 9, 1835. When a child he removed to Ohio, and later to McHenry county, Illinois. In 1854 he moved to Allamakee county where he taught school and read law in the office of Hatch & Wilber. He was admitted to practice in 1860, and immediately moved to Mitchell county with his young wife. He taught school in West Mitchell, and in 1861 was elected county superintendent of schools. He served in that position until the death of his wife, then resigned and went into the service, as stated.

Because of his knowledge of law he was called upon to act in many court martial cases.

Soon after he was mustered out of the service he formed a law partnership with his former instructor, L. O. Hatch, at Waukon, Iowa. He made that place his home until his death, which occurred at Long Beach, California, October 27, 1915. He married a second time at Waukon, and leaves one surviving son. In 1873 he became circuit judge of the tenth district, and held that position until that court was abolished, December, 1886. He then became district judge of the thirteenth district, and held that office two years, when he was elected judge of the state supreme court. He served in that capacity twelve years, and until his health failed. He was a devoted Mason, and for many years held high office in the state in that order.

With such a record as that here outlined, it is needless to add that Judge Granger possessed ability of high order, and that he made friends of all his acquaintances.
