The student of history cannot carry his investigations far into the records of Mitchell county without learning of the close connection of the Groth family with the agricultural development and progress of this section of the state. A. A. Groth of this review was born on the old family homestead September 29, 1868. After acquiring a common school education he attended St. Ansgar's Seminary and later worked on his father's farm until 1898, when he became proprietor of a meat market in connection with his brother, T. A. Groth. They later sold the business and purchased a grocery store, since which time they have engaged in that line of trade. They have built up a very large and gratifying patronage and are among the leading business men of the town. They are progressive in all that they undertake, their prices are reasonable and their dealing is at all times characterized by the strictest integrity and recognition of the rights of others. They carry a well selected line of groceries and put forth every effort to please their customers, recognizing that satisfied customers are the best advertisement. A. A. Groth is also a stockholder in the National Bank.
On the 15th of March, 1905, Mr. Groth was united in marriage to Miss Inga M. Eidahl, a native of St. Ansgar and a daughter of Ole Eidahl. They have become the parents of two children: Alton O., who was born December 29, 1905; and Irling A., who was born May 5, 1910.
The family attend the Norwegian Lutheran church and are interested in all those forces which work for the uplift and benefit of the community. In his political views Mr. Groth is a republican, having supported the party since age conferred upon him the right of franchise. He has served for two terms as a member of the city council and exercises his official prerogatives in support of all that tends to advance civic standards and civic welfare. He belongs also to the commercial club. His attention, however, is most largely given to his business affairs. Aside from his connection with the grocery trade and with banking, he is a stockholder in the Cooperative Lumber & Grain Company. In all that he does he is actuated by a spirit of enterprise and progress which never stops short of the successful accomplishment of his purpose. He represents one of the old and honored pioneer families of the county, one that has contributed to the growth and development of this section, and as one of the progressive business men of St. Ansgar he occupies an enviable position among the representative citizens of Mitchell county.
