Martin Moe, 80, Honored at St. Ansgar Gathering

Pioneer Newspaperman Took Prominent Part in Many Civic Affairs

ST. ANSGAR, June 3 [1935] -- Martin Moe, who will be 80 years of age Tuesday, was honored Sunday afternoon at a gathering of 16 near relatives and friends. His daughter, Miss Mamie Moe, was the hostess. Mr. Moe was born June 4, 1855, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, and came with his parents to St. Ansgar in 1869.

A pioneer newspaperman, he owned and published the St. Ansgar Register from 1876 to 1878, when he sold out and founded the St. Ansgar Enterprise. In 1892 the Enterprise was sold to the late Miles Culver and Mr. Moe entered the insurance and real estate business.

He was one of the original stockholders of the St. Ansgar Telephone company and served as president of it for 25 years. He has been one of the outstanding men in the community, having taken a large part in the civic affairs of the town and county.

Nine years ago he retired from active business because of poor health. His favorite hobby has been the collecting of old coins. He has what is perhaps the largest and finest collection in this part of the country.

Mason City Globe-Gazette, monday, June 3, 1935.
