He was born in Lewis county, New York state, April 17, 1870, son of Richard R. and Mary (Salisbury) Richards, natives of Wales.

He received his primary education in the schools of his neighborhood, coming to Otranto, Iowa, with his parents in 1880. There he also attended the schools, and then remained on the Otrando Stock Farm, working for his father until the latter's death, when he continued to conduct the same farm until 1901, when he and his mother came to Mower county, where his mother purchased 120 acres of land in section 32, Lyle township. To this Mr. Richards has added a few acres of his own. They have erected some fine buildings, brought the land to a high state of cultivation, and now have a model place in every respect.

Mr. Richards is single, a Republican, a Presbyterian, and a member of the Masonic order and the M. W. A.
