County News. Strahan.

Not unexpectedly, yet with a shock to the community, came the announcement Monday morning of the death of Mr. George W. Ewing, which occurred at 5:35 o’clock. A victim of that relentless disease, consumption, it had been apparent to his friends for some months that it was merely a matter of short time till the message would come bidding him exchange time for eternity. A trip to the far West, which it was fondly hoped might prove beneficial and possibly result in restored health and prolonged life, did not arrest the ravages of the insatiable disease which had too firm a hold to be shaken off, and a few weeks ago Mr. Ewing returned home to peacefully pass away surrounded by his stricken family and a host of sorrowing friends. Few men in Mills County enjoyed a wider circle of friends than did Mr. Ewing, being in every way worthy of friends, because he was himself a true man and a true friend. Honorable, upright and consistent in his contact with his fellows, intelligent and firm in his convictions, but always tolerant of honest opinion in others, he was necessarily recognized as a leader and wielded a large and potent influence upon the right side of public questions. As a citizen he enjoyed the respect of all who knew him; as a neighbor he was a trusted favorite and as a husband and father, was loved, revered and honored. To the afflicted family we desire to tender our sincerest sympathy in their irreparable loss. To the bereaved bosom companion and sorrowing children the gloom now enveloping them is deepened by the memory of the sudden taking away of a dear son and brother who preceded the father to the land beyond but a few weeks. May they be sustained by Him who remembers the widow and fatherless in their affliction. The funeral services, under the auspices of Milton Summers Post, of which Mr. Ewing was an honored member, was held at the Church at 11 o’clock, Rev. D.B. Fleming, pastor of the Malvern Presbyterian Church, officiating. A large number of sorrowing friends were present, including several from a distance, and a long procession followed the remains to the Malvern Cemetery where they were tenderly laid to rest amid the tears and regrets of all. Rest in peace loving husband, indulgent father, kind friend and valued neighbor.
