Thos. P. Kayton

Another of Mills County’s foremost citizens passed away last Friday in the death of T.P. Kayton at his home in White Cloud township near Strahan. He was one of our earliest settlers and has always been identified with the very best interests of the community in which he lived. His funeral at his late home, Sunday, was one of the largest in years as every one in that vicinity knew and loved the kindly old man, whose face had so long been familiar to that locality. Seldom, if ever, are we called upon to chronicle the death of so good a man - whose every day life so strongly exemplified sturdy christian character.

Thos. P. Kayton was born in Montgomery County, Virginia, October 17th, 1902 (sic). He was stricken with pneumonia almost eight weeks ago, and passed peacefully away at his home at Strahan, Iowa, March 22th, 1902, age 69 years 5 months and 14 days.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1850 in Ripley County, Indiana.

He came to Iowa in 1856, enlisted in the 15th Iowa in 1861 and served in the civil war three years. He took part in the memorable battle of Shiloh and fought at Corinth and in the siege of Vicksburg.

At the time of his death he was a member of the Milton Summers Post at Malvern, Iowa.

He was married to Mrs. Selia Kayton in Ripley County, Indiana in 1866. Two children were born to them. Ida, who died in infancy, and Ella, who with her husband, George F. Salyers, lives at the old home.

After his return from the war he continued a resident of this county and in 1869 located on the farm that was his home until his death. Here he built his home that was known far and wide for its hospitality, good cheer and model home life.

He leaves a wife and daughter and three children of his wife’s by her first marriage with his brother Henry Kayton, two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were held at the house Sunday, March 23rd, 1902 conducted by Rev. L.B. Carpenter.

“Uncle Tom” as every one called him, was a devout Christian, a liberal giver, loyal to all the interests of the church, he lived such a life as to commend the cause of the Master. His was an active life, his nature was sympathetic, he was possessed of strong courage and met the difficulties of life with a cheerful, resolute will. His council was wise and prudent. His home was always open to his pastor. His noble Christian spirits, his patience in suffering, his strong love for his wife and family, his perfect and implicit trust in his Savior, are among the legacies which will be treasured by his friends. His Christian character abides in influence with the people of this community.
